International Women's Day has marked the plight and achievements of women for more than a century, with the first informal observance held in 1909. Since then it has developed into a formally recognized day by the UN and is celebrated around the world.
When it first began, women were demanding that they be given the right to vote - which they received in Britain in 1918 but just last year in Saudi Arabia the demand was the right to hold public office and to be given equal employment rights and opportunities as men.
It is undoubtedly a special day for women. With more than 70% women in the workforce it was an important occasion for us at Kauvery Hospital. This is how we celebrated women's day in style:-
School Outreach program: Our Nurses conducted a community outreach program at Chennai Corporation School, Mylapore on the 6th of March. They raised awareness about Women's health, Hygiene and importance of good eating habits through role-plays and musical drama.
