Millet Upma

Millets has made a great comeback. This recipe is my experimental dish and my family loved it so much that I make it pretty often. Jowar is a treasure trove of nutrients like calcium, iron, phosphorous, thiamine and protein. Just a simple mango pickle can be an excellent accompaniment. Or if you are looking for something fancier try this Butternut Squash Gravy to serve along with this dish.

Ingredients:

  • Half cup Cholam/Jowar
  • Half cup Raw rice
  • Jeera 1 tsp
  • Coconut Oil
  • Mustard 1 tsp
  • Urad Dal 2 tsp
  • Channa Dal: 1 tsp
  • Grated coconut 1 tbsp
  • Red Chillies
  • Onion 1 cut fine
  • Hing 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste

Method:

Soak Jowar and Rice together for half an hour to 45 minutes.

In a mixi grind the millet/ rice together till grainy adding the jeera.

In a deep heavy bottom pan, add coconut oil. Add mustard, urad dal and chana dal and the onions and fry for a minute or two. Add curry leaves and hing. Add 2.5 cups of water. Add salt and the grated coconut. Let it boil. Add the ground millet rice mixture and cook on low flame till done. Serve hot with coconut chutney.
