Did you know that only 30% of Indian adults are aware of pneumonia, its symptoms, treatment, and prevention—despite India shouldering nearly a quarter of the global pneumonia burden? This silent but deadly lung infection remains a leading cause of hospitalisation and death in our country. On the occasion of World Pneumonia Day, it’s more important than ever to equip yourself and your loved ones with the facts. Here’s what everyone should know about pneumonia—and how you can stay safe.
Pneumonia is a lung infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. It leads to the airways and air sacs in your lungs filling up with excess mucus, making it difficult to breathe and causing persistent coughing. The main signs to watch out for are trouble breathing, coughing with mucus, fever or chills, chest pain, feeling weak, and sometimes even blood in your cough. While anyone can get pneumonia at any age, certain groups are at higher risk, such as young children under five, adults over 65, smokers, those with chronic illnesses, cancer patients, and people with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms such as a persistent cough, fever, and difficulty breathing should not be ignored. Doctors usually diagnose pneumonia by listening to the chest with a stethoscope and may recommend tests like blood investigations or chest X-rays to confirm the presence of infection. In certain cases, a procedure called bronchoscopy might be needed to analyse airway secretions. Early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and recovery.
The type of treatment you receive for pneumonia depends on the underlying cause—whether it’s bacterial, viral, or fungal—as well as the severity of your illness and your overall health. It is treatable, especially when identified early. Doctors may prescribe antibiotics, antiviral or antifungal medicines, and sometimes oxygen therapy or hospital care for more severe cases. Most mild cases can be managed at home with rest, medications, and proper care.
For those experiencing mild pneumonia symptoms, certain home remedies may provide relief. However, if symptoms do not improve within 48 hours or worsen, it’s essential to seek medical help.
Coughing is the body’s way of clearing mucus, but excessive or persistent coughing can be distressing. Herbal solutions like peppermint or eucalyptus may soothe the airways and break up mucus, easing cough and pain. Fenugreek tea is also known to help clear mucus, while saltwater gargles can expel throat mucus, although using too much salt may have the opposite effect. Steam inhalation and saline nasal drops can reduce inflammation and help relieve both cough and congestion.
Breathlessness is a serious symptom that requires immediate medical attention. For mild shortness of breath, sipping warm water, drinking small amounts of coffee or green tea, and inhaling moist air or steam may help open up the airways and bring some relief. Above all, rest is crucial for recovery, as it allows your body to heal.
Chest pain often accompanies persistent coughing. Ginger tea or turmeric milk can reduce inflammation and make breathing easier, while hot soups with pepper may help clear chest phlegm. For mild fevers, staying hydrated and using a lukewarm compress or bath can lower your body temperature. Paracetamol can be used for mild fever, but consult a doctor if the fever is high or persistent. Chills usually go hand-in-hand with fever and can be managed by drinking warm liquids and soups. General body weakness is common due to the inflammation from pneumonia. Incorporating garlic, honey, and pepper into your diet may help reduce inflammation and boost your immune system.
If your symptoms worsen—especially breathlessness—or if home remedies fail to bring improvement, it’s time to consult a pulmonologist. Prompt medical attention can make all the difference in recovery.
Preventing pneumonia is possible, and small lifestyle changes can greatly reduce your risk. Practise regular breathing and limb exercises, avoid smoking, minimise exposure to air pollution and dust, and maintain a healthy diet and proper sleep. Crucially, staying up to date with vaccinations for flu and pneumonia can protect you and those around you.
Pneumonia poses a significant health challenge in India, but with awareness, timely action, and preventive measures, you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe. This World Pneumonia Day, let’s spread the word—because the more you know, the better you will be.
