The ACL or anterior cruciate ligament:-<\/strong><\/h2>\n

* Runs diagonally in the middle of the knee
\n* Prevents the tibia from sliding out in front of the femur
\n* Provides rotational stability to the knee<\/p>\n

Causes of ACL tear<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u2022 Injury to side of knee(ex: football tackle)
\n\u2022 Overextending knee joint
\n\u2022 Changing direction abruptly while running
\n\u2022 Landing from a jump
\n\u2022 Sudden turning
\n(Note: Basketball, football, soccer, and skiing are common sports linked to ACL tears)<\/em><\/p>\n

Symptoms<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u2022 Knee makes audible pop when extending
\n\u2022 Swelling around the knee joint
\n\u2022 Pain when putting weight on injured leg<\/p>\n

Immediate First Aid<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u2022 Rest with foot elevated
\n\u2022 Apply ice on the affected area
\n\u2022 Pain medication
\n\u2022 Don\u2019t put weight on the leg (use a crutch)<\/p>\n
