Kavuni Arisi Kanji

Karuppu kavuni rice, or black rice as it is known in English, is packed with health benefits. Though many know it as forbidden rice, the name is a misnomer since this rice is nutritious and has more protein, iron and fibre compared to other forms of rice.
This recipe makes use of kavuni rice to make a delicious and healthy kanji (porridge) which is just perfect for the monsoon.
Ingredients
- Kavuni rice – 1/2 cup
- Medium size onion, chopped – 1
- Garlic – 8 cloves
- Jeera, crushed – 1 tsp
- Green chilli, slit – 1
- Curry leaves
- Coriander leaves
- Buttermilk – 1 cup
- Rock salt
Method
- Wash the rice and soak it in drinking water overnight.
- Next day, take only the rice in a mixer jar and grind coarsely.
- To a heavy bottom pan, add this rice and the water in which the rice had been previously soaked.
- To this, add all the other ingredients – onion, garlic, jeera, chilli, curry leaves and coriander leaves.
- Add 3 cups of water and cook stirring continuously for about 10 to 15 minutes.
- The rice, once cooked, gets a thick and creamy consistency.
- Switch off the flame and add buttermilk to bring the porridge to the required consistency.
- Add salt according to individual taste.
This kanji is very tasty and has a unique nutty flavour.
