Kavuni Arisi Kanji

Kavuni Arisi Kanji

Karuppu kavuni rice, or black rice as it is known in English, is packed with health benefits. Though many know it as forbidden rice, the name is a misnomer since this rice is nutritious and has more protein, iron and fibre compared to other forms of rice.

This recipe makes use of kavuni rice to make a delicious and healthy kanji (porridge) which is just perfect for the monsoon.

Ingredients

  • Kavuni rice – 1/2 cup
  • Medium size onion, chopped – 1
  • Garlic – 8 cloves
  • Jeera, crushed – 1 tsp
  • Green chilli, slit – 1
  • Curry leaves
  • Coriander leaves
  • Buttermilk – 1 cup
  • Rock salt

Method

  • Wash the rice and soak it in drinking water overnight.
  • Next day, take only the rice in a mixer jar and grind coarsely.
  • To a heavy bottom pan, add this rice and the water in which the rice had been previously soaked.
  • To this, add all the other ingredients – onion, garlic, jeera, chilli, curry leaves and coriander leaves.
  • Add 3 cups of water and cook stirring continuously for about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • The rice, once cooked, gets a thick and creamy consistency.
  • Switch off the flame and add buttermilk to bring the porridge to the required consistency.
  • Add salt according to individual taste.

This kanji is very tasty and has a unique nutty flavour.
