What is Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery is a form of surgery aimed at improving function, form or aesthetics of a particular part of the body. The name is derived from the Greek word plastikos which means "to mold or to give form". Plastic surgery has been made famous by celebrities who aim to improve or retain their appearance through the years. However, that is only one type of plastic surgery. Plastic surgery offers hope to innumerable patients who suffer from various physiological deformities caused by various reasons.
Accordingly, plastic surgery is divided into 2 types:
Reconstructive surgery: This aims to correct abnormal shapes, missing tissues, or restore function in a certain part of the body which may have been caused by any of these reasons:
Mishaps: Accidents, burns and sporting injuries that affect one or more parts of the body
Infection: Due to viruses or bacteria that can disable one or more parts of the body
Developmental abnormalities: Improperly formed limbs or any such skeleto-muscular defects
Congenital (present at birth) anomalies: Missing or misshapen facial parts or features
Tumors: That may cause removal or reduction of an organ in the body
Cosmetic surgery: The more famous type, this involves reshaping, re-contouring, reduction or augmentation of one or more parts/organs/tissues in the body. These may involve parts of the head, face, neck and chin (called Craniofacial or Maxillofacial surgeries), or other parts of the body. There are multiple cosmetic surgeries, some of the popular ones being:
Mammoplasty: Augmentation or reduction of breasts
Rhinoplasty: Reshaping the nose with or without the use of implants
Chin augmentation: Implanting a synthetic material to enhance the chin shape
Liposuction: Removing pockets of fat from specific spots on the body
Skin treatments: Various procedures to remove or reduce scars, birthmarks, moles, skin tags, etc, or rejuvenation of skin to make it look younger
How are plastic surgeries performed?
Plastic surgeries of either type are undertaken by qualified, trained and experienced plastic surgeons that have specialized in either reconstructive or cosmetic surgery. Most of these surgeries involve general anesthesia and hospitalization for a few days, while some cosmetic procedures like skin treatments involve local anesthesia and are outpatient procedures.
Post-operative care is important with any plastic surgery and can involve medication to suppress allergies or reactions, and the use of special gear that is worn on the concerned part to improve the outcome.

What is Microsurgery?
As the name implies Microsurgery involves reconnecting tiny parts like blood vessels, nerves, and various tissues in one or more parts of the body. The procedure may also involve transferring a piece of tissue to the reconstruction site. Considering the size of the parts being operated on, microsurgeries invariably involve a microscope like instrument for magnifying the area to be operated, endoscopes and tiny instruments to perform the maneuvers and a large screen to display the image.
Microsurgery is an integral part of both reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries. That is why; a microsurgical lab is required to ensure better outcomes for any kind of plastic surgery.
