There is a general perception among public that visiting a hospital or getting admitted to a hospital can cause infection. Though it is not true, it is the duty of healthcare providers that all measures are taken to prevent hospital acquired infection. To educate the nurses, Kauvery Hospital conducted a national level conference on “Hospital Infection Control Practices”. This conference was organized in association with the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council and was attended by 150 nurses.
When we saw 96-year-old Brinda Lakshmi being wheeled into the emergency room with a broken hip after a fall, we instantly recognized her. The chirpy woman had walked out of Kauvery hospital two years ago after we replaced her left hip following fracture. She fell again and this time, her right hip was badly fractured. And we knew that if we didn’t treat her for the injury, she would never be able to walk again. Our team of Orthopaedic doctors treated Brinda Lakshmi with a complete hip replacement and she was back on her feet immediately after the surgery. The worst thing that can possibly happen to an elderly person is a fall. At that age, bones take longer to fuse and heal. Sometimes that doesn’t happen at all. If left untreated they may be bedridden. Many elderly patients hesitate to undergo surgical treatment. But, Brinda Lakshmi opted for surgery and now she is walking independently. To keep the elderly people independent in their activities of daily living is the motto of our specialized orthogeriatric Department.
Cardiac disease is the major cause of death worldwide and more so in India. For several decades, cardiac bypass surgery has been the first line of treatment for patients with blocks in the blood supply to the heart. This center was declared open on the occasion of World Heart Day by Respected Dr R Nataraj, IPS, DGP(Retd) and MLA of Mylapore in the presence of our cardiologists Dr KP Sureshkumar, Dr Amal Louis and Dr Manoj.
