Kauvery Hospital Salem Successfully Performs Complex Sternoclavicular Joint Reconstruction
Kauvery Hospital, Salem, has successfully treated a rare and life-threatening case involving a 50-year-old female patient with a complex posterior dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint (SC Joint). The condition was managed through a multidisciplinary surgical approach, marking a significant achievement for the hospital.
Patient Presentation and Diagnosis
The patient sustained a severe injury to her left shoulder and chest wall, leading to persistent chest pain radiating to the shoulder and arm, along with numbness in her left upper limb. This numbness was caused by compression of vital neurovascular structures due to the dislocated joint.
CT and MRI scans confirmed a posterior dislocation of the left sternoclavicular joint, which was exerting pressure on critical blood vessels including the arch of the aorta and the brachiocephalic vein. CT angiography further revealed an intimal tear of the aorta, making the situation highly complex and potentially life-threatening.
Surgical Intervention
Given the immediate risk to life, surgery was performed without delay. The complex procedure was led by Dr. Manivannan, Consultant Orthopaedics, Arthroscopy & Joint Reconstruction Surgeon, Kauvery Hospital, Salem, with the support of Cardiac Surgeons Dr. Naveen Chandar and Dr. Niranjan, Consultants in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
During surgery, the dislocated joint was repositioned and reconstructed using the Semi-T graft, ensuring stability and relieving compression on the vital structures.
Recovery and Outcome
At her two-month follow-up, the patient has made a full recovery. Her symptoms have resolved, shoulder function has been restored, and her overall quality of life has significantly improved.
