Dear KWAY readers,

As we approach World Health Day on April 7th, I invite you to contemplate the intriguing concept of “Fone Health”. The World Health Organization defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, extending beyond the mere absence of disease.

As a family physician, I am compelled to draw parallels between our lives and our smartphones, those ubiquitous companions that have revolutionized the way we live, work, and interact. While they have brought unprecedented convenience and connectivity, they also pose risks to our mental and physical health, particularly when we compare our lives to the curated highlight reels of others. Watching other lives on phone reels mostly leads to feelings of inadequacy, dissatisfaction, and irritability, often accompanied by a creeping sense of inadequacy and anxiety.

This deluge of information, much of it unverified and misleading, can have dire consequences for our mental health. We may find ourselves succumbing to unnecessary anxiety, trying unproven remedies, and pursuing futile treatments, ultimately compromising our physical health. The internet is replete with self-proclaimed experts peddling miracle cures and untested solutions, preying on our vulnerabilities and peddling false hope.

Let us instead harness the potential of this relationship by comparing ourselves to our phones and gleaning insights from their functionality. Do we prioritize our own self-care with the same diligence that we charge our phones?

Consider the following parallels:

  • We recharge our phones meticulously to maintain optimal performance; similarly, we require to take adequate rest, nutrition, and engage in physical activity to function at our best.
  • We update our phones to stay current; likewise, we can refresh our habits, cultivate mindfulness, and nurture meaningful connections.
  • Phones are protected with covers; we too should safeguard our mental health by establishing boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and seeking support when needed.
  • We upgrade our phones for improved performance; we can also adopt new perspectives, habits, and lifestyles that foster personal growth.
  • Phones require judicious battery management; we must prioritize self-care, rest, to maintain our energy levels.
  • We customize our phones to suit our preferences; we can tailor our self-care routines to meet our unique needs.
  • Phones are backed up to prevent data loss and require regular maintenance; investing in our mental and physical health is essential to protect our reserves of energy, prevent burnout, and ensure overall well-being.

As we strive to optimize our digital lives, let us focus on cultivating a harmonious synergy between technology use and wellness. This entails setting boundaries, prioritizing face-to-face interactions, and engaging in activities that promote digital wellness. By doing so, we can upgrade our approach to health and cultivate a more compassionate, resilient, and thriving version of ourselves.

This World Health Day, let us commit to nurturing a healthier relationship with technology, one that fosters growth, connection, and overall well-being.

Have a wonderful month ahead.

I would love to know what you think about our monthly newsletter. Feel free to give your feedback via email [email protected].

A Day That Reminded Me What Truly Matters

Dear Readers,

Life has a way of surprising us when we least expect it. No matter how carefully we plan, each day unfolds with its own rhythm sometimes chaotic, sometimes ordinary, and occasionally, profoundly meaningful.

It was one such overwhelmingly busy day at work. My routine remained the same moving to meet one patient to another, offering care, comfort, and sometimes just a simple conversation to bring a smile. In the middle of this rush, I met a 36-year-old man from Bangladesh. At first, it felt like just another interaction, but little did I know that this encounter would stay with me long after the day ended.

He was admitted for a renal transplant. I was relieved that he could communicate in English, and we began talking. Soon, I realized he wasn’t alone his wife and sister were by his side. While he spoke little, his sister opened up more. What started as a casual conversation slowly unfolded into a deeply emotional story.

The family had traveled all the way from Bangladesh to Chennai in search of better treatment. As his shared how her brother had been the pillar of their family since childhood supporting them, educating them, and ensuring they grew into confident, independent women.

Then came the moment that truly moved me. When she learned about his condition, she made a life-changing decision to donate her kidney. Not out of obligation, but out of love. Pure, selfless love. It wasn’t an easy choice. She was young, with her whole life ahead of her. But love has a way of rising above fear.

After thorough medical evaluations, compatibility tests, and careful monitoring, the results finally came in the match was perfect. What followed was a day filled with both anxiety and hope. As the brother and sister were wheeled into the operation theatre, there was an unshakable courage. The surgery was successful.

The relief, the tears, and the gratitude it was overwhelming. The family’s joy was not loud, but deeply felt. Their smiles said everything words could not. They thanked the doctors, the staff, and perhaps silently, each other.

Standing there, witnessing this journey from fear to hope, from sacrifice to healing I felt something shift within me. In a profession where we often see pain and uncertainty, moments like these remind us why we do what we do. Moments like these make our hearts feel lighter. They remind us that even in uncertainty, there is hope. And in every act of kindness or sacrifice, there is a story worth telling.

Love, when rooted in selflessness, becomes the strongest force in the world. It gives people the courage to make unimaginable sacrifices and the strength to overcome life’s toughest battle.
