Breaking Barriers: How Communication Transforms Patient Care

Patient: A North Indian woman recently relocated to Tamil Nadu

Clinical History: Post-operative status, after lumpectomy, left breast (suspected malignancy), done elsewhere.

Patient's Story

How do you convey your anxiety, fear and pain when the. language you speak cannot be understood by your health care providers? The patient was in a bed, alone at the far end of the emergency room, silent, calm and visibly worried. She looked a north Indian. I gently inquired what language she spoke. She replied in Hindi. I switched to Hindi hearing which she visibly relaxed I learned from her that her husband worked in a different state and was transferred here, so she came along. I could learn from her file that she underwent a lumpectomy left breast that was thought to be malignant.

On arrival here, she was referred to us for follow up. A left axillary node dissection was planned for the next day. She was probably in denial; she referred to her problem as a ‘ stone’ in the breast. Her eyes filled with tears as she asked whether the problem was serious. I reassured her, saying that we were glad that she quickly came to us soon after the transfer and that we would take good care of her.

Outcome

The simple act of communication broke her isolation. She brightened considerably when I told her that both her husband and I are soldiers; he served the CISF and I was from the Airforce, and that made us a “military family”. That connection replaced her fear with trust.

Conclusion

Medical care is not just about files and surgeries; it is about human connection. In this instance, we bridged the linguistic gap and found common ground (the Armed Forces connection). That transformed the ER experience for a vulnerable patient. It served as a reminder that the most powerful tools we healthcare providers carry are our considerate listening and our thoughtful words
