Woman Power: The Entrepreneur of Hope
Patient: A middle-aged truck driver in his early forties.
Condition: Tongue cancer requiring surgery (hemiglossectomy) and follow-up oncology care.
Patient's Story
He was a man in the prime of his life, working as a truck driver to support his family, until a diagnosis of tongue cancer changed everything. He lost half his tongue to surgery . Follow up treatment was being planned . He was a truck driver and would most likely not be driving any more on the highways. Beside him stood his able and determined wife. Their fourteen-year-old son, studying in high school, stood nearby. A nine-year-old daughter was waiting at home.
Outcome
When I quitely inquired to her about her plans to earn an income for the family, she remained completely unfazed. She confidently shared the business plan she had worked-out: she would sell “ilaneer” (tender coconuts) to earn an income. I turned to the son and asked him what his career plans are. He planned to finish school and study commerce . Seeing the mother’s entrepreneurial spirit and the son’s aim to become an accountant, it was clear that while the father recovered under our oncology team’s care, the family’s future was being secured by the strength of his wife.
Conclusion
The true heart of this recovery lies in the wife’s unwavering optimism. Despite the weight of a family crisis, she chose to lead with confidence rather than sink into despair. We wished the new “family business” well, and resolved to ensure rigorous medical follow-up for the patient.
We learned that healing involves both the patient’s physical recovery and the family’s stability.
A determined woman has no time to indulge in despondency; she builds a new way to ensure her family’s viability.
