The urinary tract is the drainage system of the body.
An infection can occur anywhere in the urinary tract.
It is usually caused by the bacteria E. coli.

Symptoms of UTI in lower tract
• Burning when passing urine
• Frequency of urination increases
• Very little urine is passed
• Increased frequency of urination without passing much urine
• Bloody or smelly urine
• Dark coloured urine
• Women may have pelvic pain
• Men may experience rectal

Symptoms of UTI in the upper tract
• Lower back pain
• Tenderness in upper back
• Fever
• Nausea
• Vomiting

Tips to prevent UTI
• Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water/day
• Don’t hold urine in bladder for long periods
• Choose contraceptives wisely
• Wash new undergarments before using them
• Avoid using public toilets
• Wear clean, loose, cotton underwear
• Consume probiotics

For women
• Wipe front to back after using the toilet
• Change sanitary pads regularly during menstruation
