Ageing is a universal physiological process that affects every organ of the body. The face, being the most visible part of the human body, reflects these changes more prominently than any other region. While ageing cannot be prevented, scientific advances allow us to delay its manifestations and restore facial harmony through a combination of lifestyle measures, medical therapies, minimally invasive procedures, and surgery. Anti-ageing treatment is therefore based on sound anatomical and physiological principles rather than cosmetic enhancement alone.
Facial ageing is influenced by intrinsic factors such as genetics and chronological ageing, together with extrinsic factors including ultraviolet exposure, smoking, pollution, stress and lifestyle. These processes lead to skin laxity, wrinkles, fat atrophy, tissue descent, pigmentation changes and loss of facial volume. The superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS), retaining ligaments and facial fat compartments play a central role in facial ageing.

Prevention remains the cornerstone of anti-ageing management. Regular sunscreen use, cleansing, moisturization, adequate sleep, exercise, smoking cessation and a balanced protein-rich diet with antioxidants reduce the effects of extrinsic ageing. Topical retinoids, vitamin C, niacinamide and peptides improve skin quality and delay early ageing.
Minimally invasive procedures have revolutionized facial rejuvenation. Botulinum toxin reduces dynamic wrinkles, while hyaluronic acid fillers restore volume. Biostimulators, chemical peels, microneedling, lasers, intense pulsed light (IPL), radiofrequency and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) improve skin quality and stimulate collagen formation.
Patients with significant skin laxity and tissue descent benefit most from surgery. Modern facelift techniques reposition the SMAS to restore youthful facial contours rather than merely tightening the skin. Blepharoplasty addresses ageing around the eyes, while liposuction and autologous fat grafting restore facial volume and harmony. Careful patient selection and individualized planning remain the key to successful outcomes.

Artificial intelligence is improving facial analysis, treatment planning and outcome prediction, while regenerative medicine—including platelet-rich plasma, fat grafting and stem-cell-based therapies—promises further advances in facial rejuvenation and tissue regeneration.

Anti-ageing management extends far beyond cosmetics.
