This milestone showcases the power of organ donation to transform lives and offer new hope.”
A Race Against Time
Late on December 15, Kauvery Hospitals received an alert from the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) about two brain-dead donors in Madurai. Three patients on dialysis due to end-stage renal disease were identified as suitable recipients:
- A 52-year-old IT professional from Chennai.
- A 46-year-old widow from Trichy, supported by her family.
- A 42-year-old woman from Perambalur.
The organ retrieval process began immediately, with teams ensuring the kidneys were transported to Trichy as quickly as possible.
Teamwork and Expertise in Action
Executing three transplants in such a short span required exceptional coordination between multiple departments:
- Organ Retrieval: Two ambulances transported the kidneys from Madurai to Trichy.
- Surgical Teams: Under the leadership of S. Senthil Kumar, Head of Urology and Renal Transplant Surgery, and Dr. Sasi Kumar, Consultant Urologist, two surgical teams worked simultaneously at the Cantonment and Tennur Centers.
- Anesthesia Care: Three dedicated teams, led by Senthil Kumar Kaliannan, ensured each high-risk patient received expert care during surgery.
Transplant Timeline:
- 12 PM – 4 PM: First transplant at Cantonment Center.
- 4 PM – 8 PM: Second transplant at Cantonment Center.
- 6 PM – 10 PM: Third transplant at Tennur Center.
All three procedures were successfully completed, with the patients demonstrating excellent recovery and freedom from dialysis.
Promoting Organ Donation
These transplants were made possible by two donor families in Madurai, who turned their loss into life-saving opportunities for others. Kauvery Hospitals actively promotes organ donation through initiatives like the Kauvery Organ Donor Awareness Initiative (KODAI), inspiring more people to pledge their organs and give the gift of life.
A Remarkable Feat
“This achievement is a shining example of teamwork, dedication, and medical expertise,” said Dr. D Sengutuvan, Co-Founder & Executive Director, Kauvery Hospital. “It underscores the importance of organ donation and the incredible impact it has on saving lives.
