Wholesome, delicious, and shallow-fried on a tawa!
This is a healthy snack made with boiled beetroot and potato, oats, and flavourful Indian aromatics. These tikkis are easy to prepare, require very little oil, and are crispy on the outside but soft on the inside.
Ingredients:
- Medium-sized beetroots, boiled: 2
- Medium-sized potato, boiled: 1
- Onion, finely chopped: 1
- Ginger and garlic, crushed: 1 tsp
- Green chillies, finely chopped: 2
- A pinch of garam masala
- Powdered oats, as required for binding
- Salt to taste
- Oil, as required for shallow frying
Method:
- Prepare the vegetables: Boil the beetroot and potato until tender. Peel, mash, and blend them until smooth.
- Sauté the aromatics: Heat a little oil in a pan. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until soft. Add the crushed ginger, garlic, and green chillies, and sauté until fragrant.
- Combine the ingredients: Add the sautéed onion mixture to the blended beetroot and potato. Mix in the garam masala and salt.
- Add the oats: Gradually incorporate powdered oats into the mixture, mixing well until it reaches a consistency that can be shaped into tikkis. Allow the mixture to rest for 10 to 15 minutes so the oats absorb the moisture.
- Shape the tikkis: Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into small, flat patties.
- Shallow-fry on a tawa: Heat a tawa over medium heat and lightly grease it with oil. Place the tikkis on the tawa and cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, or until they develop a crisp, golden crust.
- Serve: Transfer to a serving plate and serve hot with mint chutney, coriander chutney, or a yoghurt dip.
Tips for Perfect Tikkis:
- Add powdered oats gradually to avoid making the mixture too dry.
- If the mixture is too moist, cook it briefly in a pan to evaporate excess moisture before adding more oats.
- Shape the tikkis evenly for uniform cooking.
Enjoy these wholesome beetroot and oats tikkis as a healthy evening snack, breakfast option, or appetiser!
