Black Rice Porridge or Karuppu Kavuni Kanji

Black rice, or karuppu kavuni arisi as it is known in Tamil, is loaded with protein, iron and fibre – consuming it would be highly beneficial for us.

This black rice porridge can be made as a healthy morning breakfast. It prevents hunger pangs, and if the porridge powder is prepared beforehand, the porridge hardly takes any time to make.

Ingredients

For the Porridge Powder

  • Black rice – 100 gm
  • Barley – 100 gm
  • Horse gram – 100 gm
  • Moong dal – 50 gm
  • Jeera – 25 gm
  • Pepper – 25 gm

For the Porridge

  • Water – 2 cups
  • Small onions and garlic as required

Method:

For the Porridge Powder

  • Dry roast all the ingredients for the porridge powder separately.
  • Cool and make into a coarse powder.
  • Store in an airtight container.

For the Porridge

  • Boil 2 cups of water.
  • Mix 20 grams of the porridge powder with a little water – make sure there are no lumps.
  • Pour this mixture into the boiling water and cook.
  • Add garlic and small onions while cooking to enhance the taste.
  • Once cooked, add salt according to requirements.
  • You can add buttermilk, too.
  • Serve hot.
