What Is Clenbuterol?
It is a drug which acts on the beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the body and increases their action. It was initially tried as a treatment in COPD and asthma patients due to its action on the airway smooth muscle causing airway dilatation. However, due to its effect on other organ systems it has been tried and misused by gym goers and athletes.
What are the Effects of Clenbuterol?
It increases heart rate, increases airway diameter, increases metabolism and heat generation, weight loss, tremors, nervousness, reduction in appetite, increases muscle endurance and improves athletic performance.
Is It Available in the Market?
Yes. In tablet and injectable forms.
Is It FDA Approved?
Not approved for usage and is banned.
Can it Be Used to Enhance Athletic Performance?
Only available as off the label use. Not recommended for athletes. Athletes whose blood test is positive for clenbuterol will be banned from taking part in sports/athletic activities. It is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) prohibited list.
Doses Used?
Only as off-label usage. 20-30 micrograms for COPD and asthma. 60-100 micrograms dosage for weight loss.
Doses are initiated at 20 micrograms per day and then increased every 3 days to the desired dosage. Only 16 weeks of treatment in 12 months duration is allowed as per manufacturers instructions. It needs to be complemented by exercise and dietary modifications.
Adverse Effects?
Anxiety, mood changes, agitation, palpitations, increased sweating, tremors, rapid breathing, insomnia, headache, nausea, vomiting, dehydration, cardiac arrhythmias, chest pain, electrolyte abnormalities and even sudden cardiac death.
Can You Take It?
Absolutely not worth the risk.
