Women with PCOS are often found to have high insulin levels due to insulin resistance which means they are unable to use the insulin produced. Insulin is a hormone that helps the cells in the body convert food into energy. Very high insulin levels can cause the ovaries to produce more male hormones. Insulin resistance can make it harder to lose weight, which is why women with PCOS often experience this issue. They are also at risk of diabetes, hypertension and heart problems later in life.
