As a family physician, I see beyond the perfectly filtered photos and curated social media feeds. What’s trending as “stylish life” often masks the real struggles people face with health, stress, and well-being. It’s easy to get caught up in appearances — posting about green smoothies, sunrise yoga, or “self-care” Sundays. But inside, many of us are juggling exhaustion, anxiety, and unhealthy habits. Prostate specific antigen is a protein produced by the prostate gland. The prostate gland is a male accessory gland found at the base of the urinary bladder. Generally, random blood (serum) sample is taken for testing; a PSA level up to 4 ng/mL is considered as normal. PSA levels increase with age; hence a higher cut-off (5 ng/mL) would apply for elderly men above 70 years and lower cut-off (2.5 ng/mL) would apply for younger men below 55 years and for patients on drugs to reduce the size of prostate due to BPH (dutasteride and finasteride). The clinical history of the patient is vital in identifying temporary causes of abnormal rise in PSA. Causes could include an infection, inflammation of prostate, prostatic biopsy, urinary catheterisation, urological procedures, vigorous exercise (cycling), and recent sexual activity (ejaculation).
