- The patient was suffering from intense abdominal pain and diarrhoea for two days, before her hospitalisation
- Within an hour of admission, the patient was promptly diagnosed and moved to the operating theatre for the removal of her large haemorrhagic ovarian cyst
Tirunelveli, April 19, 2025:
Kauvery Hospital, a leading multispecialty hospital in the city, recently treated a 34-year-old woman by successfully removing a massive 20×15 cm haemorrhagic ovarian cyst. She was rushed to the hospital with unbearable abdominal pain. Following a prompt clinical evaluation and diagnostic imaging, the medical team identified the cyst and moved her to surgery within an hour of admission. The cyst was completely removed, and the patient is now free from pain and discomfort.
A haemorrhagic ovarian cyst is a type of functional cyst filled with blood that forms on the ovary, commonly seen in women of reproductive age. While smaller cysts often resolve on their own without the need for intervention, larger or actively bleeding cysts can cause significant pain and complications, sometimes requiring surgical removal. These cysts can lead also to other symptoms such as bloating, and digestive discomfort, especially if they rupture or grow in size.
The patient suffered from severe abdominal pain and diarrhoea for two days, and was unable to sleep or eat. During the physical examination at the hospital, doctors noted that she experienced acute pain in her abdomen even with gentle palpation. Suspecting a gynaecological cause, particularly a uterine or ovarian cyst, the team immediately conducted a scan. Imaging revealed a large haemorrhagic ovarian cyst measuring 20 x 15 cm and actively bleeding. Recognising the urgency, the medical team, headed by Dr. B. Sindhuja, an expert obstetrician and gynecologist, performed the emergency surgery and successfully removed the cyst. The patient experienced immediate relief from pain and discomfort, making a smooth post-operative recovery.
In her comments, Dr. Sindhuja, said, “A haemorrhagic ovarian cyst is usually small and resolves on its own without intervention. However, in rare cases—like this one—where the cyst grows large and begins to bleed, it can cause intense pain and serious complications. Statistically, only about six out of one lakh women develop a cyst of this size. In this case, timely diagnosis through imaging and swift surgical intervention were crucial. We were able to completely remove the 20×15 cm cyst, and I’m happy to report that the patient is now pain-free and recovering well,”
In his comments, Dr Lakshmanan – Medical Administrator, said, “We take pride in our strong expertise in obstetrics and gynaecology, supported by state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging technology. The hospital is fully equipped with modern infrastructure to handle complex cases like this one. In this particular instance, our team’s preparedness and swift response were crucial. Within just an hour of the patient’s admission, we were able to start the surgery, thanks to the coordinated efforts. We are committed to providing the highest standard of care, ensuring timely diagnosis and treatment for all our patients.”
