I’m Satish Kumar. When I was 18, in 1996, I met with a rail accident that forever changed my life. I survived the operation, but both my legs were amputated. Fast forward 14 years to 2010, and another battle began. It was discovered I had HCV in my blood, a consequence of the blood transfusion I received back in 1996. My liver began to deteriorate. By 2016, while the HCV was cured, my liver had progressed to Cirrhosis. I grappled with the symptoms of Cirrhosis, surviving day by day, all the while unaware that my life was hanging by a thread Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated my condition. In 2021 I developed hydrocele & umbilical hernia. Due to my liver condition, doctors advised against immediate surgery. As my health declined, I had the good fortune of meeting Dr. Swaminathan. He suggested a liver transplant, and through his counseling, my fear of the transplant subsided.
By March 2023, my condition worsened with the cumulative effects of Cirrhosis, umbilical hernia, and hydrocele. My days were numbered. I registered for a liver transplant with TRANSTAN (TRANSPLANT AUTHORITY OF TAMILNADU), thanks to Dr. Swaminathan and his team at Kauvery Hospital. Their assistance, particularly Immanuel and Surendar was invaluable in navigating the formalities.
As my health continued to decline in June’23, it became clear that waiting for a deceased donor was not an option. My wife volunteered to be my living donor. Again, Dr. Swaminathan’s team guided us through the government approval process for the operation. Dr. Swaminathan, alongside Dr. Babu Elangovan and the anaesthetist Dr. Vigneshwaran, performed the surgery on June 14, 2023, at 7:30 AM. Remarkably, I was discharged within two weeks from hospital after surgery.
After liver transplant, my health has been meticulously monitored by Dr. Swaminathan and his exceptional team (Dr Karthikeyan & Ms. Harshini). This journey has been marked by a profound sense of care, expertise, and unwavering support that has significantly contributed to my recovery and well-being.
