Cutting-Edge Care: Kauvery Hospital Treats Two Cancers at Once Using Robotic Surgery

Chennai, 11th May 2026: In a rare and remarkable case, doctors at Kauvery Cancer Institute, Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, successfully treated a 58-year-old woman who was diagnosed with two diff erent early-stage cancers : breast cancer and thyroid cancer, through a single robotic surgery.

The woman had presented to the hospital with a lump in her right breast. Tests confirmed that it was early-stage breast cancer. As part of the routine evaluation, doctors performed a PET scan to check if the cancer had spread. During this scan, the team unexpectedly discovered another early-stage cancer in the thyroid gland.

Since both cancers were detected at an early stage, the team of specialists at Kauvery Hospital decided to treat both conditions in a single surgery using advanced robotic technology.

The surgery was performed using the 4th generation da Vinci robotic system, which allows surgeons to operate with greater precision through very small cuts. Through carefully placed incisions near the breast and under the arm, doctors were able to remove the thyroid gland and the breast during the same procedure.

One of the biggest advantages of this approach was that it avoided visible scars on the neck and front portion of the breast. The small incisions were placed in areas that are naturally hidden, resulting in minimal scarring while ensuring complete removal of the cancer.

The surgery was successful, with doctors confi rming that both cancers were completely removed.

Dr. Sujay Susikar, Senior Consultant – Surgical Oncology, Kauvery Cancer Institute , Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, said: “This was a rare case where two separate cancers were found at an early stage at the same time. Instead of performing two diff erent surgeries, we planned a single robotic procedure to treat both conditions at the same time. Robotic surgery allows us to operate with great precision and minimal disturbance to surrounding tissues. Since the cancers were detected early and treated with advanced technology, the patient could recover faster and return to normal life sooner.”

Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-founder and Executive Director of Kauvery Hospitals, said: “At Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, we are committed to bringing advanced medical technology that improves patient outcomes and comfort. Performing two cancer surgeries at once using robotic technology is a major step forward in patient care. This shows how early diagnosis and modern surgical techniques can help patients recover faster while reducing the physical and emotional impact of treatment.”

Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, continues to off er advanced cancer care through a team of specialists and state-of-the-art technology.
