Specialised emergency care at Kauvery Hospital, a leading multi-specialty hospital in the city, ensured swift recovery of a toddler who was rushed to the hospital with severe burns from a hot water accident at home. The boy, two-and-a-half years old, sustained second-degree burns affecting over 50% of his legs and abdomen. He was discharged within a week.

A second-degree burn, also known as a partial-thickness burn, refers to damage to both the outer layer of skin (epidermis) and part of the inner layer (dermis).Upon admission, the child was immediately stabilised with the intravenous fluids and antibiotics. Subsequently the plastic surgery team proved crucial interventions including specialised collagen dressings. The coordinated care was provided by a medical team headed by paediatrician Dr. Anne Prewina and plastic surgeon Dr. Balaji Sharma.

In their comments, Dr. Anne Prewina, and Dr. Balaji Sharma, said, “The child was admitted to the emergency ward with extensive second-degree burns covering 54% of his legs and abdomen. We stabilised him promptly with fluids and antibiotics. We used advanced collagen dressings to promote faster wound healing, reduce inflammation, and minimise scarring. It was the coordinated, expert care that played a crucial role in the child’s swift recovery and early discharge within a week”.

In his comments, Dr. K. Lakshmanan, Medical Administrator, Kauvery Hospital, Tirunelveli, said, “We are proud to be at the forefront of medical treatment, technology, and services, delivering high‑quality emergency and specialised care even in the most critical situations.
