Covid New BF.7 Variant
Variants of a virus have an altered RNA build but there would be similarities in the characteristics. Covid-19 variants include Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omicron.
In India, we had an infection of the omicron variant in January 2022. Now there is a subvariant of this variant called the covid variant BF.7.
China had been suffering a major outbreak of omicron subvariant BF.7. But in India, there is hybrid immunity developed by the previous infection and vaccines. Hence with proper precautions, we can avoid major effects from this B7 Covid variant infection.
Some Covid new variant Precautions involve following hand hygiene and eligible people getting vaccine and booster doses.
Watch Dr. Srinivasa Rajagopala, senior lung specialist from Kauvery Hospital talk about the new Covid variant – BF.7 and the precautions to be taken to avoid infection.
What is hybrid immunity | Covid BF.7 variant
What is hybrid immunity?
Hybrid immunity involves two immunities – natural infection and vaccine-given immunity.
What is natural infection?
In India, vaccines started to roll out only in April 2021 but the covid-19 infection started in December 2020. About 60% of the population were immune to the Delta virus infection naturally. This is called natural infection immunity.
Along with this, the majority of the population has received the booster dose of the covid-19 vaccine which now brings in COVID vaccine immunity into the equation.
With the combination of natural immunity and vaccine-given immunity, we had a robust immunity system.
China had a no-Covid strategy and the vaccines used by them were also not robust. Thus even a minor omicron variant like covid BF7 variant can cause havoc in that country. Watch Dr. Srinivasa Rajagopala, senior lung specialist from Kauvery Hospital talk about hybrid immunity and the new Covid BF7 variant.
