Our Dear K-Way Readers,

K-Way warmly greets you all at the beginning of another special month of 2025.

Today, the 1st of October, is a very special day as its observed as the International Day for Older Persons as established by the United Nations.

This day aims to acknowledge the contributions of older individuals to their society and addresses the issues affecting their well-being.

The main purpose is to raise awareness about aging issues and promote the rights and dignity of older persons.

The theme of this year’s International Day for Older Persons focuses on various aspects of aging (e.g., resilience, digital inclusion, etc.).

This year the theme is “Driving Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, Our Rights.”

It is very evident that the global increase in aging brings opportunities as well as huge challenges in every family which is of great concern.

Over the years advancements in science, awareness of preventive healthcare has definitely increased longevity but whether the quality of life for older persons is adequate?

This is very important. A Holistic approach of care is what is important for the elderly.

Our elders are the pillars of our society. No doubt.

Especially in India, elders are a blessing and the support system of every family.

When both the parents are working, the grandparents are the acting parents who are responsible for their grandchildren’s day to day activities.

Right from collecting the milk packets in the morning to switching of the water motor in the night it’s all their extended services to every home.

They take care of all the needs of their grandchildren like feeding them on time, dropping and picking them from school on time and accompanying them to extracurricular activities. They are the security guards for their grandchildren. They also play entertain and teach morality to them.

Though many challenges await, the benefits are greater.

Taking care is an inbuilt phenomenon to the grandparents and it’s a pleasure to them but actually there is also a constant responsibility-related stress as raising children of another generation is indeed a huge responsibility.

In that process, they often ignore their personal needs.

Amidst their work and the responsibility of taking care of their grandchildren and engaging themselves in social activities, they are also forced to make choices like travelling away from their homes to relocate to a new area or country and sometimes they are also separated from their spouses which indirectly affects their mental health.

But all is well if they are appreciated and if their affection is not taken for granted.

Older persons contribute both economically, socially and culturally but the age-associated challenges are health issues, memory issues, mobility and gait issues, social isolation, access to services, financial dependency and fear of end of life.

Let’s analyse elders’ requirements for a standard quality of life.

Focus needs to be on their health and well-being.

Promoting healthy aging through social inclusion and combating ageism and isolation.

Addressing the rights of older persons and preventing physical abuse or verbal abuse is a must and their dignity should never be compromised.

Understanding intergenerational solidarity is necessary to fill the gap between elders and youngsters.

India has a large, growing elderly population. They contribute to the cultural and heritage values of our nation. Respect for elders is inborn in our traditional Indian societies. But the growing younger generation, often due to work pressure, miss out on family bonding and a generational gap develops.

Families should attend aging awareness events, seminars and discussions on aging. Community engagement and activities that promote intergenerational interactions like group tours could be of great value.

Elders should focus on lifestyle, diet, physical activity and other factors that impact health span. Healthcare access and management of chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension and cardiac problems should be attended to.

Regular reviews with doctors will reduce polypharmacy which in turn will reduce the side-effects of multiple medicines and also relieve patients of the financial burden that comes from multiple medicine bills. Regular annual checkups not only help detect incipient conditions but also act positively on the mental health of the elderly.

Last, but not the least, awareness on government health and monetary beneficial schemes and health insurance-related knowledge is much required for elders.

Let’s encourage our elders and build a healthy society.

I would love to know what you think about our monthly newsletter. Feel free to give your feedback via email [email protected].

Highlights @ Kauvery

Hello Kauverians!

Welcome to Outstanding October!

September was truly Spectacular, not just in name, but in every sense of the word. It marked the culmination of years of hard work, collaboration, and unwavering commitment to clinical excellence and patient safety. It was a month where the spotlight was on Kauvery, and we rose to the occasion in every way.

Hello Kauverians, and welcome to Optimistic October!
By Uma & Vishnu

Preparations for the JCI accreditation survey were in full swing across every department. From clinical teams to support services, everyone came together with purpose, precision, and pride. Each department was ready to showcase its excellence, and the energy was palpable throughout our hospital. Our staff stood tall, eager to demonstrate the finesse, professionalism, and patient-centric care that define us. There was a collective sense of pride and purpose as we welcomed the surveyors, who came from across the globe to evaluate our systems and practices.

This was not just any survey, this was the evaluation for JCIA Edition 8, the latest and most rigorous version of the world’s most respected hospital accreditation standard.

It all began in January 2025, when Kauvery Hospital, Vadapalani made history by becoming the first hospital in the world to be accredited under the JCIA Edition 8 standards. This landmark achievement put Kauvery on the global map, setting a powerful precedent for what was possible. Inspired by that success, the Alwarpet team took on the challenge with determination and focus. As the flagship of Kauvery, we were eager to carry forward the legacy and we did just that. The JCIA process is renowned for being intense and demanding, with strict parameters around patient care, safety, quality, and leadership. But at Kauvery, these values aren’t just part of a checklist, they’re part of our culture.

For us, patient safety is the foundation of everything we do. This strong foundation made the accreditation journey not only achievable, but meaningful. From day one, the surveyors saw a hospital that wasn’t performing for inspection but simply functioning at its natural level of excellence.

And we are proud to share that Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, our flagship unit has officially achieved JCIA accreditation.

From infrastructure to clinical pathways, infection control to patient experience, every element was appreciated. The surveyors’ feedback reflected what we have always believed Kauvery Alwarpet stands among the best in the world. But what makes this even more remarkable is that Kauvery becomes the first hospital group in India to have two units accredited under JCIA within a span of just six months.

Achieving JCIA accreditation is a proud milestone for us but its true significance lies in what it means for our patients. It means that every patient walking into Kauvery will continue to receive the highest standards of clinical care, in the safest treatment environment, now officially globally benchmarked.

This achievement is a celebration of every nurse, doctor, technician, administrator, and support staff member who gave their best and a tribute to every patient and family who placed their trust in us. Their belief in Kauvery has been our greatest motivation, driving us to constantly raise the bar. This milestone belongs to all of us a shared success built on care, commitment, and unwavering trust.

As we step into October, we look forward to continuing our outstanding standards of care while embracing the joy and togetherness of the festive season. Together, let’s make October a month of unity, celebration, and continued excellence in everything we do.

From struggle to strength : An untold story

Ms. Monica
Ms Monica,
Service Excellence

It was an engaging day at work where I was visiting lots of patients and attenders, and there was one such patient who caught my attention a 54-year-old from Kutralam, an inspiring individual who has overcome significant physical challenges.

This gentleman had been admitted with complaints of fever and hypertension. Despite being confined to a wheelchair due to muscular dystrophy, his presence lit up the ward. What made him remarkable was not just his medical condition, but the way he carried himself with immense grace, politeness, and warmth. He was always surrounded by cheerful faces, as though his kindness attracted joy itself. It was a wonderful reminder that the energy we radiate shapes the circle of people we keep close to us.

During his course of treatment, he was seen as an inspiring individual to everyone around him. His cheerful nature, gratitude, and calm approach brought comfort not only to his family but also to fellow patients and staff. He showed us that strength is not just in the body but in the mind and heart.

As our conversations deepened, I learned that his journey with muscular dystrophy began years ago. Though the condition progressively limited his physical abilities, he never allowed it to limit his vision for life. With determination and resilience, he went on to establish a non-governmental organization (NGO) that supports physically challenged individuals. Through this initiative, many have gained access to education, rehabilitation, and medical facilities, giving them hope for a brighter future.

He was admitted with fever and high blood pressure, underwent thorough medical management, and responded positively to treatment. With close monitoring, supportive care, and the dedicated efforts of the medical team, his condition gradually stabilized. When he was finally discharged, it was with a heart full of gratitude for the care he had received and for the chance to return to his mission of inspiring others. His stay in the hospital became more than a medical journey; it became a reminder of resilience, positivity, and the power of human spirit.

His story serves as a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for resilience, kindness, and grace. As I walked away, I carried with me the thought that some patients are not just individuals we care for they are teachers, reminding us that true strength lies in how we uplift others, even while facing challenges of our own.
