Reclaiming Health: A Wake-Up Call for the Digital Generation

Patient: Young adult working in the IT Industry

Diagnosis: Occupation and lifestyle-induced physical discomfort, weight gain, and nutritional deficiency

Patient's Story

She was a picture of absolute misery when I walked in. She was young, and, predictably employed in the IT industry. Her diagnosis, Fissure in ano, was nothing to worry about though it was painful and highly uncomfortable. She was clearly distressed. But her problem was not an acquired disease; it was directly related to her occupation and lifestyle. Her work called for long hours of sitting. Lifestyle had become radically altered. Physical activity was actively avoided. Diet was invariably unbalanced—glycemic, rich in trans fats, low in nutritional value and contained very little vitamins. The smartphone and its deep immersion in social media had become the central attraction in life as well as its primary obsession. In the process she had gained quite some weight which vitiated all other problems. She was on the slippery slope to ill-health while still very young.

Conclusion

I had only few minutes to win her cooperation, re-program her mind to adopt a healthy lifestyle, shed the excess baggage of several kilograms in weight that she had accumulated, and motivate as well as energize her to get a grip on her life and halt the slide. To my great satisfaction, she ed respond positively to my push to shake her out of the lethargy she had slipped into. She promised to emerge as a re-focused version of herself in a month’s time. I shall look forward to our next meeting.
