The Medical Store Family

Patient: He was a handsome, 70 plus years aged man.

Diagnosis: CT and MRI showing age-related cerebral atrophy and lacunar infarcts.

Patient's Story

The gentleman was admitted to a corner bed in the general ward. Upon our first meeting, he tightly gripped my hands and wept silently, unable to speak. His family—a calm wife and three grown grandchildren—filled the room. When reviewing his medications, the family demonstrated exceptional pharmaceutical knowledge, revealing they owned and operated a medical store.

Despite their medical literacy, the patient’s emotional breakdown remained a mystery until the grandchildren later visited my office. They revealed that the patient desires constant family proximity. The family had been away for just two days, triggering a severe emotional meltdown that manifested as physical symptoms.

Outcome

Recognizing that the patient’s primary need was emotional security rather than intensive medical intervention, I advised the family to take him home. He was discharged to his own bed, familiar home-cooked food, and the constant presence of his loved ones. No change of medication was required, as  his family’s return was the true cure.

Conclusion

This case highlights the profound connection between emotional well-being and physical health. Once the emotional gap was bridged by his family’s return, medical intervention became secondary to presence of   the family
