Unfazed by challenges: A Woman’s Will to Win

Patient: A 26-year-old mother of two children (aged 8 and 6) with a history of three lost pregnancies, strongly desires to have one more child.

Condition: She was diagnosed with Primary Antiphospholipid (APLA) syndrome

Patient's Story

She was just 26 years of age but had already met and overcome many challenges in her life. She had lost two pregnancies. Unfazed, she successfully delivered two children who are now 8 and 6 years old. She wanted one more and lost the pregnancy again.

Then she struck a bad patch. She who never knew sickness developed breathlessness, high fever, and began coughing out blood. At the hospital her heart began to beat fast, and she was breathing faster . Oxygen levels in her blood dropped alarmingly. X-rays showed signs suggesting pneumonia and breakdown. She continued to cough out blood. Tests now indicated clots in both lungs destroying parts of her lungs. The source of the clots was found to be in the veins of the legs.

Her tests now confirmed an unusual tendency to clot on its own. Blood thinning drugs, which could make her cough out blood worse had to be most carefully given to her, balancing her between life and death. As she continued to get worse, clot busters were used with great caution. The Kauvery team supported her round the clock as she battled for life.
