Background

The Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) program titled “Basic Concept of Nursing in Polytrauma’’ as nurses are often the first responders in emergency settings and play a pivotal role in stabilizing the patient, With the invaluable guidance of Dr. Senthil Velmurugan, Senior Consultant Radiologist and Medical Administrator at Kauvery Hospital, Tennur, we worked closely with the Emergency and critical teams to curate the program’s content. Following thorough planning and coordination, the event was scheduled for 29th April, 2025 and received approval from TNNMC on the same date. The session was held from 9 AM to 5 PM at the A-V Conference Hall, Tennur, Kauvery Hospital, Trichy. The event saw the participation of 50 staff nurses from across the Trichy region, as well as doctors and renowned speakers.

The event was organized with the leadership of the chairperson Ms. Jaya Menon, the Nursing Superintendent, myself, Ms. Lucy Grace, as the organizing secretary, the 4 expert doctors and 8 speakers specializing in Emergency and critical care trainers provided a comprehensive and clear explanation of polytrauma, while this time, we also included senior-level nurses as speakers with extensive experience in renal care to offer their valuable perspective on patient recovery and management. This one-day event was attended by 50 staff nurses from across the Trichy region, as well as doctors and distinguished speakers.

Under the patronage of Dr. Senthil Velmurugan, Senior Consultant – Radiologist and Medical Administrator at Kauvery Hospital, Tennur, and with the support of chairperson Ms. Jaya Menon, the Nursing Superintendent, myself, Ms. Lucy Grace, as the organizing secretary, and the dedicated speakers and nursing in-charges, we worked collaboratively to ensure the event success.

We began the registration process online, and following registration, we conducted a pre-test using a QR code for efficient assessment.

The morning sessions included theoretical coverage of topics such as Initial Assessment in Trauma, Abdominal and pelvic injury in Trauma, Recognizing and managing Vascular Injuries in Trauma, Critical Imaging Findings in trauma: What Nurses Need to know?, Assessment and Resuscitation  in  head Injury, Monitoring and Prevention of complications During the Transfer of  Polytrauma Patients Role of Critical Care Nursing in Polytrauma Management, Classification of Shock and Fluid Resuscitation in trauma care

Afternoon Session: Practical Session such as Primary & Secondary Survey in Trauma, Spine Board Usage, Defibrillation /Synchronized Cardioversion and Emergency Drugs

Program Aim

To provide nurses with the basic knowledge and skills needed to assess, manage, and care for polytrauma patients effectively.

Goal

To ensure safe, timely and effective nursing care in polytrauma cases by focusing on early assessment, emergency interventions, complication prevention and teamwork in critical care.

Feedback Summary

After the stations, the staff completed a post-test using an online QR code. Feedback from various units was highly positive, reflecting well on the organizing team and speakers. Certificates were then handed out to all delegates. The program wrapped up at 5 p.m. with a vote of thanks and was followed by refreshments.

Conclusion

Overall, the in-house CNE conference was a valuable experience for all staff nurses, providing clarity on their doubts and boosting their confidence to effectively manage and polytrauma patients. The conference provided an engaging learning experience through interactive sessions, deepened understanding of complex topics, and fostered collaboration among staff nurses. Additionally, the positive feedback and engagement from participants underscored the success of the event and the nursing staff has developed the knowledge and skills required to deliver exceptional care to polytrauma patients moving forward.
