A Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) programme on “Prevention of Nosocomial Infections: The Primacy of Nursing Care” was successfully conducted on 28th January 2026 at the AV Conference Hall, Kauvery Hospital, Tennur.

The programme was organized under the leadership of Mrs. Esther Rani, Nursing Superintendent and coordinated by Mrs. Lucy Grace, Nurse Educator. A pre Test was conducted among the participants before the commencement of the program to assess their baseline knowledge on the topic.

The event commenced with a formal inauguration by Dr. Dominic, Senior Consultant General Physician and Dr. Rajarajan, Senior Consultant Nephrologist. The dignitaries emphasized the importance of infection prevention practices in reducing healthcare-associated infections and strengthening patient safety standards.

A special address was delivered by the guest, highlighting the significance of continuous professional development and adherence to evidence-based infection control measures.

Dr. Venkita S Suresh Group Medical Director, actively participated in the CNE programme. He encouraged the speakers and delegates and provided valuable insights and practical guidance for each topic presented, enriching the academic discussions.

Delegates from across the Trichy region actively participated in the programme.

The scientific sessions were conducted as follows:

Rapid Infection Prevention Measures in Polytrauma Emergency Care was presented by Ms. Anandhi, Nursing Incharge. The session highlighted the importance of the golden hour in infection prevention, strict hand hygiene and PPE compliance during emergency interventions, early sterile wound coverage, aseptic techniques during invasive procedures, and implementation of infection prevention bundles in emergency care.

Best Practices for Infection Control in Renal Transplantation was presented by Ms. Suganya, Senior Infection Control Nurse. The session emphasized protection of immunocompromised transplant recipients, strict isolation precautions, environmental hygiene, early identification of opportunistic infections, and adherence to antimicrobial prophylaxis protocols.

Rational Antibiotic Usage – What Nurses Should Know? Was presented by Dr. S. Shadiya Sulthana, General Medicine Resident. The speaker discussed antimicrobial stewardship principles, avoidance of unnecessary broad-spectrum antibiotics, importance of culture sensitivity testing, timely administration of antibiotics and monitoring for adverse drug reactions.

Managing Catheter-Related Infections was presented by Dr. C. Kavivarman, General Medicine Resident. The session focused on risk factors for CAUTI and CLABSI, aseptic insertion techniques, maintenance of closed drainage systems, daily review of catheter necessity and early removal to reduce infection risk.

Role of OT Team in Ensuring Sterile and Safe Surgical Environment was presented by Ms. Valarmathi, Nursing Supervisor. The session covered maintenance of sterile fields, pre-operative skin preparation, compliance with surgical safety checklists, OT traffic control and instrument sterilization standards.

Quality Assurance in CSSD Sterile Processing was presented by Ms. Rajambal, CSSD Incharge. The session highlighted proper cleaning and sterilization procedures, use of biological and chemical indicators, documentation and traceability, equipment validation, and proper storage of sterile materials.

Safe Dialysis Care: Infection Prevention in Dialysis Units was presented by Dr. Anitha Jasmine, MD, DNB (Micro), Department of Microbiology. The session emphasized prevention of dialysis-related bloodstream infections, strict hand hygiene, machine disinfection protocols, vascular access site care and infection screening.

The afternoon hands-on training sessions were conducted to enhance practical competency.

Best Practices for Securing IV Lines was demonstrated by Ms. Kasthuri, Senior Patient Safety Nurse. The session focused on proper IV stabilization techniques, prevention of infiltration and phlebitis, use of sterile transparent dressings and regular monitoring.

Maintenance and Care of Central and Peripheral Lines was demonstrated by Ms. Saranya, Nursing Incharge. The session emphasized adherence to CLABSI prevention bundles, chlorhexidine-based skin antisepsis, regular dressing changes, hub disinfection and proper documentation.

Catheter Care and Maintenance was demonstrated by Ms. Menaka, Nursing Incharge. The session covered aseptic catheter insertion, maintenance of closed drainage systems, perineal hygiene, daily assessment for catheter necessities and CAUTI prevention measures.

A post-test was conducted at the end of the programme to evaluate knowledge improvement. Feedback collected from delegates indicated significant knowledge gain and high satisfaction with both theoretical and hands-on sessions.

The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the dignitaries, speakers, organizing committee and participants for their valuable contributions.

Overall, the CNE programme successfully achieved its objective of strengthening nursing competencies in infection prevention and promoting safe, high-quality patient care.
