Continuing nursing education (CNE) certification programme on mastering vascular trauma nursing care: From initial assessment to comprehensive post-operative management.

Abstract

Vascular trauma is a life-threatening emergency that needs quick assessment and immediate treatment. Nurses play an immediate role in caring for patients from the time they arrive in the emergency department. Emergency department take responsible to assessment and stabilization of the patient. Prompt identification of the patient’s condition, immediate emergency interventions, timely transfer to the OT, and comprehensive post-operative care are essential to improve patient outcome and ensure patient safety. To improve nurse’s knowledge and practical skills in vascular trauma care the Nursing Education Department organized a program Continuing Nursing Education (CNE).

Introduction

Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) is essential for strengthening the knowledge, clinical skill, and professional development of nursing care. To support continuous learning and safe clinical practice. As part of its commitment to promoting evidence- based practice and ensuring patient safety, Kauvery Hospital, Tirunelveli, organized a CNE programme on “Mastering Vascular Trauma Nursing Care: From Initial Assessment to Comprehensive Post-Operative Management” on 23 June 2026 at the Basement Auditorium.

Overview

The aim, Vascular injuries are high-stakes emergencies where “Time is Tissue.” The CNE session designed to sharpen your skills in the rapid assessment and perioperative management of vascular trauma.

The program focused on improving patient care, safety, and teamwork in the management of vascular trauma.

Objectives

  • To improve nurse’s knowledge of vascular trauma management.
  • To enhance skills in primary vascular assessment.
  • To brief the importance of the golden hour in trauma care.
  • To strengthen intra-operative nursing care and patient monitoring
  • To identify and the management of complications early.
  • To promote effective communication and teamwork.
  • To ensure safety, evidence based and quality patient care.

Lamp Lighting Ceremony

The program began with a lamp lighting ceremony, symbolizing the illumination of knowledge, wisdom, and dedication towards excellence in nursing practice.

The Participants were warmly Welcomed, our respected dignitaries, faculty members and participants. The Nursing department attended the program, they are showed great enthusiasm and actively participated. They were keen to learn and gain valuable knowledge on vascular trauma nursing care.

Program Overview

The program commenced with a pre-test to evaluate the participant’s baseline knowledge of vascular trauma nursing care.

The Faculty members delivered informative sessions on the assessment and management of vascular trauma, emphasing early recognition, and emergency response, timely surgical intervention and comprehensive nursing care.

Early Vascular assessment

Mr. John Ebenezer, ER supervisor and Trauma care specialist, delivered the First Session, as “Primary Vascular assessment”

He explained the systematic assessment of vascular injuries using the primary survey (ABCD approaches), identification of hard and soft signs of vascular trauma, hemorrhage control, pulse assessment, capillary refill and the importance of early recognition and prompt intervention to improve patient outcome.

The highlighted points timely communication with trauma team, prompt resuscitation and early move to surgical intervention to improve patient outcomes and prevent limb and life treating complication.

The golden hour’s transition

The session,” The golden hour’s transition” was presented by Ms. Karpagam, OT Supervisor. Highlighted the significance of the golden hour in trauma care and discussed effective communication is very important, immediately activation of the vascular surgery team, patient stabilization, timely transfer to the OT for further management, and coordination among the emergency, OT and critical care teams to minimize delays in treatment.

Operation Theater Coordination in Vascular surgery:

Mr. Ponraj, OT Senior Staff nurse, handled the Third session, Intra Operative Coordination,” The Session emphasized the responsibilities of perioperative nurses, including OT preparation, Instrument management, maintained of aseptic technique, Patient positioning, surgical safety, Documentation, and effective teamwork to ensure smooth handle the surgical procedure.

Comprehensive post-operative care:

The final session, Comprehensive post-operative care” was delivered by Ms. Amuthakani.V Senior Nursing Supervisor. Explained the principles of post-operative nursing care include continuous neurovascular assessment, monitoring for bleeding, graft patency, compartment syndrome, reperfusion syndrome, Pain management, infection prevention, wound care, early mobilization, and patient education, to promote recovery and prevent complications.

Code Violet Mock Drill:

Following the scientific sessions, a Code Violet Mock Drill Was conducted By ER team. To demonstrate the appropriate management of aggressive and violent situations in the ER settings. It highlighted the importance of teamwork, effective communication, safety precaution and practices, and compliance with hospital protocols.

Interactive Clinical Learning

A case based interactive learning session was conducted on vascular management, encouraging participants to actively engage in clinical scenarios, Dr.Srikanth Sir Vascular surgeon share their experience and discuss appropriate nursing interventions. The session motivated critical thinking, emergency preparedness and decision-making skill among participants for effective vascular trauma care.

The program concluded with a Post-test, Participants feedback session, the feedback reflected a significant improvement in participants, their understanding of vascular trauma nursing care and emergency preparedness. Their gain more knowledge regarding the vascular trauma.

Certificates were distributed to the participants in recognition of their active participation and successful completion of the CNE program.
