Introduction

World Breastfeeding Week 2026 was celebrated at Kauvery Hospital, Electronic City, from 1st to 8th August 2026, with a series of educational, awareness-based and interactive activities aimed at promoting, protecting and supporting breastfeeding. The week-long celebration focused on strengthening breastfeeding practices, empowering mothers with appropriate knowledge and encouraging healthcare professionals to provide consistent and evidence-based lactation support.

Inauguration Ceremony (Day 1)

The celebration commenced on 1st August 2026 with a grand Inauguration Ceremony held at the New OPD First Floor. The programme brought together healthcare professionals, nursing staff and families to reaffirm the hospital’s commitment towards creating a supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers. A special highlight of the inaugural programme was the participation of 20 lactating mothers, who were invited and honoured in recognition of their commitment to breastfeeding. Their presence added a meaningful and emotional dimension to the celebration and served as an inspiration to other mothers and families. The programme emphasized that breastfeeding is a shared responsibility and that mothers require encouragement, guidance and support from healthcare professionals and family members. The Lactation Guidebook was launched by Dr. Suguna M, Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynaecology during the inaugural ceremony. The Launch was an important initiative towards empowering mothers with reliable and practical information & strengthening breastfeeding support beyond the hospital settings.

Another significant milestone of the inauguration was the launch of the Golden Hour initiative. The initiative highlighted the importance of the first hour after birth in establishing successful breastfeeding and strengthening the mother–baby bond. It emphasized key practices such as early initiation of breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact and timely lactation support, reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to excellence in maternal and newborn care. Our commitment is to ensure that every baby born at kauvery Hospital receives the Golden Hour they deserve. The subsequent days featured a variety of engaging activities.

Poster Competition (Day 2)

Breastfeeding Poster Competition was conducted at the New OPD First Floor. Participants showcased their creativity and knowledge by developing posters around breastfeeding awareness and related health messages. The competition encouraged participants to communicate important breastfeeding concepts in a simple, attractive and meaningful manner.  The posters highlighted themes such as exclusive breastfeeding, benefits of breast milk, early initiation, maternal nutrition, lactation support and the importance of family involvement. The activity created an engaging visual platform for spreading breastfeeding messages and encouraged participants to think creatively while communicating evidence-based information.

Rangoli Competition (Day 3)

The Rangoli Competition was conducted at New OPD Basement, providing participants with an opportunity to combine creativity with health awareness. Participants presented colourful and meaningful rangoli designs depicting breastfeeding, mother–baby bonding, maternal nutrition and the importance of breastfeeding support. The activity generated enthusiasm and encouraged teamwork while conveying positive health messages through traditional art.The competition demonstrated how creative activities can be effectively used to promote important health messages among staff and the wider hospital community.

Breastfeeding Super foods Competition (Day 4)

The Breastfeeding Superfoods Competition was conducted at the 5th Floor Training Hall, focusing on the importance of adequate maternal nutrition during the breastfeeding period. Participants prepared and presented nutritious and innovative food items suitable for breastfeeding mothers. Special emphasis was given to nutritional value, variety, practical preparation and suitability for lactating mothers. The activity helped reinforce the message that maternal nutrition plays an important role in maintaining the mother’s health and well-being during lactation. It also provided an interactive opportunity for participants to share practical and healthy food ideas.

Breastfeeding Quiz Competition (Day 5)

Breastfeeding Quiz Competition was conducted at the 5th Floor Training Hall to strengthen knowledge and encourage continuous learning among participants. The quiz covered important areas including breastfeeding benefits, early initiation, exclusive breastfeeding, lactation management, maternal nutrition, newborn care, Golden Hour practices and common breastfeeding challenges. The programme created a healthy competitive environment while helping participants assess and improve their knowledge. It also reinforced the importance of evidence-based breastfeeding practices among healthcare professionals.

Workshop on Golden Hour Excellence in Breastfeeding (Day 6)

The professional Workshop on Golden Hour Excellence in Breastfeeding was conducted at the RO Office Training Hall. The session highlighted the important role of healthcare professionals in creating a positive breastfeeding experience and ensuring that mothers receive appropriate support from the very beginning. The workshop also reinforced the newly launched Golden Hour initiative, encouraging consistent implementation of best practices across the care continuum.

Valedictory Programme and Baby Shower Celebration (Day 7)

The week-long celebration concluded with a Valedictory Programme and Baby Shower Celebration at the New OPD First Floor. The valedictory programme provided an opportunity to acknowledge the active participation and enthusiasm demonstrated throughout the week. The various competitions and educational activities created a positive learning environment and encouraged staff to actively engage in breastfeeding promotion.

A special Baby Shower Celebration was organized for expectant mothers and fathers. The event provided a joyful and supportive platform for families preparing to welcome their newborns. Breastfeeding awareness messages were incorporated into the celebration, emphasizing the importance of preparing families for successful breastfeeding even before the baby is born.

The participation of both expectant mothers and fathers highlighted that breastfeeding is a family-supported journey, where fathers and family members play an important role in providing emotional, practical and nutritional support to the mother.

Impact of the Celebration

The World Breastfeeding Week celebration served as an effective platform for education, awareness, professional development, maternal empowerment and family engagement. The combination of competitions, educational initiatives, workshops and celebrations encouraged active participation and reinforced the importance of breastfeeding support at every stage.

The Lactation Guidebook launch and Golden Hour initiative strengthened the hospital’s focus on standardized breastfeeding support and evidence-based practices from the very beginning of a baby’s life. Honouring 20 lactating mothers during the inauguration recognized their efforts and encouraged a positive breastfeeding culture within the community.

The Baby Shower Celebration further extended the message of breastfeeding support to expectant parents, emphasizing that successful breastfeeding is supported not only by mothers but also by fathers, families and healthcare professionals.
