History

A 12-year girl presented with acute gastroenteritis with severe dehydration. She was incidentally found to have this finding:

A-Bifid-Uvula

Diagnosis:A Bifid Uvula

Notes:

  1. Also called the submucous cleft palate.
  2. May cause velopharyngeal insufficiency, middle ear infections and nasal intonation.
  3. Prevalence rates 0.18% – 10.3% (rare)

Associated syndromes:

  1. Loeys-Dietz syndrome
  2. Cornelia de Lange syndrome
  3. 22q11 deletion
