Dear Kauverians,

World Anaesthesia Day 2025 – Anaesthesiology in Health Emergencies: A Discipline Prepared, Responsive, and Indispensable

World Anaesthesia Day, observed on October 16th, marks the first public demonstration of ether anaesthesia in 1846 by William T. G. Morton—an event that forever transformed surgery into a

humane and scientific discipline. Today, anaesthesiology remains at the forefront of perioperative medicine and is globally recognized as an indispensable pillar of modern healthcare.

At our institution, we proudly uphold this legacy. Our team of 14 consultants and 9 postgraduate trainees delivers comprehensive anaesthesia care across all age groups—from fragile neonates to resilient nonagenarians. A large proportion of our patients belong to ASA grade III and IV, underscoring our expertise in managing complex, high-risk scenarios with precision and vigilance.

We integrate cutting-edge practices as standard care. All nerve blocks and vascular access procedures, including central venous and arterial lines, are performed under ultrasound guidance to ensure accuracy, safety, and comfort. Remarkably, we have successfully secured central venous access in new-borns weighing as little as 850 grams. By consistently using pencil-point spinal needles, we have also eliminated post-spinal headaches for more than seven years—an achievement that highlights our commitment to patient safety. Multimodal analgesia further ensures effective pain relief throughout the perioperative journey.

Beyond the operating theatre, anaesthesiologists are the backbone of critical care. We play vital roles in ICUs, trauma resuscitation, obstetric safety, emergency airway management, palliative services, and non-operating room anaesthesia such as sedation for MRI and endoscopy. In health emergencies—whether pandemics, mass casualties, or natural disasters—anaesthesiologists provide life-saving support through mechanical ventilation, invasive monitoring, hemodynamic stabilization, and crisis resource management.

This year’s theme, “Anaesthesiology in Health Emergencies”, celebrates not only the scientific progress of our specialty but also the resilience, preparedness, and adaptability of anaesthesiologists worldwide. We are the constant guardians of the patient’s vital signs—heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate—ensuring that critical issues are identified and managed before they become life-threatening.

Ours is a discipline of silent vigilance and visible impact. True to our motto, “Vigilance”, anaesthesiologists remain steadfast in their core commitment: patient safety, in every moment, under every circumstance.
